Historical significance
When we evaluate the significance of the tour we have to look at the effect it had at the time, how many people it affected, and what affects it had on the future. In 1981 the tour had great significance not just for New Zealand and South Africa but also for other commonwealth countries and African countries. New Zealand’s continued contact with South Africa caused many rifts between national relationships. In New Zealand it caused a 56-day feud between urban and rural people, families and friendships. The vast majority of New Zealanders were involved whether for or against the tour. At the time New Zealand was already considered a Pariah due to its relations with South Africa so hosting the tour definitely did not give us any merits. The protests around the tour gave hope to Black rights activists in South Africa to continue fighting and that the People of New Zealand were behind them. Nelson Mandela has been quoted as saying it was as “if the sun had come out” when he heard that the Hamilton game had been cancelled. Negotiations to end apartheid happened between 1990 and 1993 and New Zealand’s response to the tour could be considered as long-term effect as many people in South Africa believed that New Zealand was with them through and through, and this just showed that even the beloved friend had betrayed them.
